The Tradition of Hand Finishing
Imitation Gold and Silver leaf, hammered into thin sheets, is the material used in contemporary ‘Leafing’ or ‘Gilding’. The leaf is layered over a moulding that has been prepared by filling the corners, sanding, sealing and the application of a dark base colour. It is then chemically treated to produce the desired effect and then finished with a hardener to protect the gold/silver leaf.
Leafing (or gilding) produces a high quality, smooth finish that is both luxurious and highly sophisticated. It’s a technique that has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years and one in which The Framing Centre specializes.
